OPQ Aspens


Aspen is the name of six very similar poplar species common all over the temperate and subarctic regions of the northern hemisphere. The most widespread are the European/Asian populus tremula and the American populus tremuloides.

The typical aspen has a slender, long trunk with a bark ranging from almost white to dark gray, always with a slight greenish tint. The further north, the darker the bark tends to be. Older trunks have fissured bark but aspen trunks don't often grow very old. The root system system of the plant can last for a long time though, one American aspen is believed to be a staggering 80,000 years old(!) A single plant usually has multiple trunks, in clusters and spread across a wider area, making a grove or small forest.

OPQ Dead trees

A group of four dead trees in a single low poly (only 428 triangles) mesh, perfect for any wild nature environment and also of course for horror scenes. ;-)

By default the trees are 15 m tall and cover a 20x19 m area and are textured with Rey's Old Wood 05A for a gnarly "long dead an dried out" look. Both size and texture are easily modified though and the trees are made to work right away with any tileable wood or bark texture with a vertical pattern.

OPQ Nightmare trees

Dead trees with black bark. Perfect for horrow scenes, halloween and also burned out war and disaster scenes. According to a customer review they also work great as generig dead trees in more idyllic natural environments.

OPQ Privacy Screens

We're not too fond of privacy screens at OPQ. They can be neccessary sometimes but they tend to look rather flat. So we thought we could do better.

Rather than a single flat sheet, an OPQ Privacy Screen 8 has eight pannels criss-crossing each other. It's only 2 m deep (and you can reduce it to even les if you want to) so it doesn't take up much space but it still gives a nice 3D effect that simply isn't possible with traditional privacy screens. It's a lott less laggy too, with fewer triangles than a prim, more efficient texture us and alpha masking.

The screens are 32 m long by default, exactly the size of one side of a standard 1024 m2 parcel, but since they are modifiable, they can be resized to any length you like. You may want to adjust the texture repeats if you do though. With some basic uilding skills, you can also retexture it with other tree textures, even combine up to eight different ones on the same screen.
Two special tips:
  • Increase the depth to a few meters and you get a fairly decent landfiller background forest as a bonus.
  • Some of the screens also work as great bush lines if you adjust the vertical repeat or simply lower the screen slivhtly into the ground to hide the tree trunks.
The screens are currently only available in Second Life because there doesn't seem to be much need for them on other grids. But let us know if you want them on Kitely/the Hypergrid or TAG, we can list them there too if somebody want them!
